Mumbai residents will experience a quieter summer this year, at least noise pollution-wise, thanks to an order issued by the Mumbai Police banning firecrackers and certain fireworks from May 11 to June 9. The directive, issued by the deputy commissioner of police (operations), prohibits individuals from lighting or throwing any form of firecrackers or fireworks, including rockets or chidi (sky lanterns), within the city limits.

The order comes in response to a representation made by Mumbai's civic body, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), to reduce noise and air pollution levels in the city during the summer season. The police believe the prohibition will help ensure a healthier environment for citizens, particularly those with respiratory issues, and contribute to better overall air quality in the city.

"Such a move will help mitigate the fears and concerns of citizens, especially respiratory patients and animal welfare activists," said an MCGM spokesperson, welcoming the police's initiative.

"The police will also coordinate with the concerned authorities to take strict action against those found violating the guidelines," the official added.
