Children handling a loaded gun in New Mexico are disarmed by deputies via drone footage

Dangerous situation averted in New Mexico after deputies disarm children handling a loaded gun using drone footage.

Footage from a drone deployed by authorities in New Mexico has captured the moment deputies disarmed two children reportedly handling a loaded gun. The video, which has since gone viral, shows the dangerous situation averted in the backyard of a home in the town of Santa Fe. It begins with an officer piloting a drone from above, overlooking a backyard with what appears to be a wooded area surrounding it. The children, whose ages were not disclosed, are seen walking toward the officer, carrying what looks like a firearm in one of their hands. The other child appears to be gesturing toward the weapon.

In the video, the drone is flown away from the children and towards the nearby home. The footage then shows one of the children take the gun and point it toward the house before both kids duck out of view. Moments later, three sheriff's deputies are seen on foot, approaching the children from behind a parked car. The officers speak to the kids, seemingly calming them, and then swiftly disarm the children of the loaded gun. The entire encounter, from the moment the children are first spotted on camera until the deputies disarm them, lasts less than a minute.

Deputies later confirmed that the firearm was indeed loaded. Speaking to local press, Captain Ben Garcia of the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office said. "It's certainly not a typical call that we get here at the sheriff's office." He added that the incident was a "great example" of the effectiveness of their drone unit. While the situation was indeed a dangerous one, the drone footage indirectly captures a different kind of hazard altogether: that of the children unknowingly handling a loaded firearm.

Thankfully, the quick response and intervention by the sheriff's deputies averted what could have been a tragic outcome, raising questions about adult responsibility and gun safety in the process.
