Cam Green and Pat Cummins lead an injury-stricken Australian squad cause they will be defending champions at the World Test Championship final against South Africa
Cameron Green will make his long-awaited return from a fractured finger when Australia meets South Africa in the World Test Championship final at Lord's later this month.
The exciting allrounder has not played a Test since February 2022, when he fractured his finger in the second Test against India in Sydney. He required surgery and a prolonged period of rehabilitation to recover.
Green's inclusion in a 15-man squad announced on Monday constitutes one of the few bright spots for Australia amid a deluge of injuries that has ruled David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne, and Steve Smith out of the June 11-15 showpiece.
Pat Cummins will lead the side, with Josh Hazlewood elected vice-captain, while selectors have included five players - Matthew Kuhnemann, Michael Neser, Mitchell Swepson, and brothers Alex and Ben McDermott - who were involved in the Australia A team's victory over India A in a four-day game in Chennai.
" The injury disruptions have provided opportunities for others to press for selection, and it was great to see so many players perform well in the Australia A match in Chennai," national selector George Bailey said.
"It is a very special occasion when you get to compete in a World Test Championship final, and to do it at Lord's is really special. We're looking forward to seeing the theme of the 'Spirit of the Game' embodied throughout the match, and the eyes of the cricketing world will be on both teams as they compete for the coveted Test mace."
The squad will gather in Brisbane ahead of a planned camp in the United Kingdom, with further inclusions expected following this week's Sheffield Shield round.
