As CEO of a multi-billion dollar company, Yamini Rangan is accountable for the livelihoods of thousands of employees. Yet the Indian-origin CEO finds time to strike a healthy work-life balance. She shared that she takes off on Saturday and doesn't respond to any work-related matters unless there's a crisis. However, she starts her work on Sunday.
The chief executive of $34 billion US tech company Citrix Systems enjoys both her work and weekends, and finds it hard to stay away from the office on Sundays.
"I do take the time to enjoy and soak in every weekend but I must admit that I enjoy working on Sundays, too," Rangan said in an interview with CNBC TV-18.
Rangan, who has led the cloud computing company since January 2019, said she makes it a point to take Saturdays off and doesn't let work interfere unless there's a crisis.
"I won't say it's a rule but it's what I practice," she said.
"I really try to take time on weekends to spend time with my kids, my family, to recharge and to do different things that are more focused on non-work activities," she added.
But the CEO disclosed that she starts working on Sunday morning and tries to "get a jump start" on the upcoming week.
"It's not that I'm cramming or catching up. I just enjoy it," she said.
The CEO added that she has managed teams across time zones during her career and is therefore accustomed to working on weekends.
"For me, it's not so much about being able to unplug. I've been doing this for a long time," she said.
"I do think it's really important to make sure that you're spending time with the family and doing the things that matter," she advised, adding that she doesn't expect her team to respond to her weekend emails and tends to only use email as a last resort.
"I want my team to recharge and to enjoy their weekends and be present with their families," she said.
"When you're leading a global team, time zones are always an issue and weekend work becomes inevitable," she added.
Rangan's weekend work habits may strike a chord with India's workforce, where a recent survey by LinkedIn revealed that two in five Indians work on weekends.
