Amritsar police have arrested the owner of a truck workshop after 15 migrant labourers died after consuming spurious liquor, officials said on Sunday.

The two groups of labourers, from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, had returned to Amritsar railway station from a picnic on Saturday evening and apparently consumed the liquor at a deserted spot close to the workshop.

Officials said the victims were aged between 25 and 40 years and apparently belonged to the lower-income group. "The viscera examination of the victims has confirmed consumption of spurious liquor," a government spokesperson said, adding that efforts were on to trace other suspects and the source of the hooch.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP)carat Punjab, Gurpreet Singh Singhani, said, "So far, we have arrested the owner of the truck workshop. Raids are being conducted to nab the main accused, identified as Ramji, who is absconding."

The owner of the workshop, identified as Gurcharan Singh, was arrested for hosting the group and providing them spurious liquor, the SSP said, adding that the police were investigating the motive behind the incident.

The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the victims' families and ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident. Likewise, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Randhawa said stringent punishment would be meted out to the guilty.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed anguish at the "tragic death" of the labourers and urged parliamentarians to take up the issue of illicit liquor trafficking in their constituencies.

"This is a tragic incident. The entire country is with the families of those who lost their lives. Behind this tragedy, there is the selfish motive of certain evil forces who are using spurious liquor to kill the poor, destroy families, and play with the lives of the innocent. This is not a coincidence, but an experiment which has taken a horrific form," PM Modi said.
