French aerospace manufacturer Dassault Aviation's stock took a pounding on the Paris Stock Exchange, sinking 7% to 135.20, after reports that India deployed its Rafale fighter jets over concerns about a potential war with Pakistan.
Notably, India inaugurated its Rafale squadron just a week earlier. The plunging stock values are a stark contrast to Chinese aerospace company CAC International Holdings, which manufactures the J-10 fighter jet. CAC rose by over 4.5% on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.
The news is a blow to Dassault Aviation, for which the Rafale fighter program is the company's top revenue source. The manufacturer hasn't sold a single fighter since it inked the 7.8bn deal with India in 2016, blaming the lack of further orders on increasingly tough international competition.
Will we see more countries turn to Chinese fighter jets like the J-10, or will Dassault Aviation fight back and reclaim its market momentum?
