His mother says that he left home after that to join the army. "We were unaware that he had joined the armed forces. We came to know much later," said Shakuntala.

Shakuntala said her son never forgot to send her a postcard on her birthday every year. She proudly added that her son has faithfully served the nation for so many years, and she wishes for him to be honored with the Padma Shri award.
