The former defence secretary Ajay Kumar has been appointed as the new chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), according to a Personnel Ministry order. Kumar, a 1985 batch Odisha cadre Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, has served as defence secretary for a little over one year. He succeeded Dr. Chandra Bal Goswami, a 1983 batch Kerala cadre IAS officer, as UPSC chairman. Goswami's tenure as the head of the UPSC was cut short by two years. He was appointed in August 2020 for a period of three years but was cleared to join as the Kerala chief secretary due to his seniority in the cadre.

Kumar's appointment comes after retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Rajiv Gauba, who was appointed as UPSC chairman in August 2020, resigned from the position to take over as India's home secretary. Kumar's tenure as UPSC chairman will be until June 2028, i.e., for a period of around three years, inclusive of his current term.

It is worth noting that the UPSC chairman and members are appointed for a term of six years, or until they attain the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier. The UPSC is a premier constitutional body that conducts civil service examinations to select the country's bureaucrats, diplomats, and police officers.
