Gmail users warned over scam email requesting personal information

A recent Gmail scam has been tempting users to hand over their personal information, with the promise of unlocking a mysterious bounty of months of stored emails. Several media outlets have reported that legitimate-looking emails have been popping up in inboxes, purporting to be from Google Support. These emails ask users to grant access to their email archives as part of a supposed routine system update, thereby allowing the scammers to access and expose sensitive information contained within.

This latest scam is particularly insidious as it appears to leverage the authoritative reputation of Google itself, making users more likely to comply without suspicion. Furthermore, the scam is also a subtle variation on the usual theme of phishing scams, which usually involve suspiciously urgent requests for information or warnings of account disruption, amongst other tactics.

In response to the scam, Google has issued a statement confirming their authenticity. In a tweet by Google Cloud's Security & Privacy Officer, the tech giant advised users to "be wary of unsolicited requests for personal infoeven if they seem to come from a brand name you know & trust." This is sound advice, not only in light of this latest scam but also as a general rule of thumb to avoid phishing scams.
