BSF Soldier Released By Pakistan After 21 Days

Pakistan returned BSF soldier Purnam Kumar Shaw yesterday, 21 days after he was detained for accidentally crossing the International Border with India. This fortunate development comes after weeks of tension and after Shaw's emotional plea yesterday for his release back to his family.

Yesterday morning, at around 11 am, Pakistan released BSF soldier Purnam Kumar Shaw, after three weeks in custody. Shaw had been detained by the Pakistan Rangers on August 4 when he inadvertently crossed the International Border (IB) near the Gurdaspur sector in Punjab.

The return of the BSF soldier was confirmed by the BSF itself, as well as by Pakistan's Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). According to the BSF, Shaw was returned at the Baldiya-Armedda border crossing point, which is located in the Kasur district of Punjab, Pakistan, just a short distance from his hometown Derabasi in India.

Shaw was fortunate to have been returned at all, as such incidents of inadvertent crossings are often characterized as serious offenses, often resulting in detainment and even jail time. In a heartfelt plea yesterday, Shaw asked to be returned to his post, his family, and his friends. Thankfully, he has now been returned to his family's arms.
