A young man in Jharkhand was killed in his home by a wild elephant yesterday. The incident occurred in the Lohardaga district, disrupting the tranquility of several rural villages.

At around 8 pm, a group of elephants including a baby emerged from the nearby forest and approached the village of Khairlanji, according to the police officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The sound of the creatures' footsteps alerted the man, a 30-year-old daily wage worker, but it was too late for him to escape.

The elephant herd had wandered closer to the village due to a lack of food and foliage in the forest because of recent drought conditions. Locals say that the elephants have become more brazen in their forays into the village, illustrating the growing conflict between humans and wildlife in the area.

"The elephants are giving us hell," said a village elder, Mr. Singh. "We are scared to step out of our homes after sunset. Last week, they raided our fields and ate everything."
