The Supreme Court on Monday questioned the blanket ban on blood donations by persons from the LGBTQIA+ community, calling for a reconsideration of the policy that excludes this cohort. The top court bench, acting on a batch of pleas challenging the prohibition, sought expert opinion on providing a more inclusive and scientifically founded blood donation policy.

The bench, comprising Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud and Justices A S Bopanna and Vishal Dhagum, has asked the central government and National Blood Transfusion Council to consult experts and institutions engaged in the field of transfusion medicine, HIV medicine, and public health.

They have been asked to consider the recommendations for allowing LGBTQIA+ persons to participate in blood donation drives, ensuring that the policy is driven by scientific reasoning and public health considerations.
