India has been struggling with a semiconductor shortage, further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, Indian semiconductor designers are working hard to develop home-grown GPUs, with the hope of having a working prototype by the end of the year.

The indigenous GPU will be a general-purpose semiconductor chip that can be used in the long run for various tasks, such as local cloud platforms, data analytics, and AI training. While these chips won't be available on the market for at least another few years, the development and progress remain an essential milestone in India's strive to be self-sufficient in semiconductor manufacturing.

While the timeline for the completion of the project is end of 2024, a working prototype of a GPU is expected by the end of 2022.
