Chemical leaks and explosions in India are all too common. This time, a blast at a chemical factory in southern India has left scores injured and homes flooded with chemical-laced water.

Earlier this week, an explosion at a chemical storage facility in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore district shook the neighbourhood. Local media outlets report that the explosion took place inside a tank at the facility, which is owned and operated by Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO). The explosion was so powerful that it blasted open the tank's lid and shattered windows in the surrounding area.

The explosion occurred around 2 am local time on Monday (July 2, 2018), andInitial reports state that at least sixteen people have been hospitalized with injuries and health complications believed to have been caused by the explosion. Local officials say that the injured individuals suffered from complaints such as respiratory issues, skin irritation, and vomiting.

More than 100 homes in the vicinity of the blast site have been flooded with chemical-laced water, which is believed to have leaked from the tank following the explosion.

This is not the first time that the area has experienced a devastating industrial accident. A massive chemical leak in a nearby area in December 2020 killed at least 11 people and sickened hundreds more.

The local government has ordered an investigation into the explosion. Until the investigation is completed, the reasons for the blast and its causes and effects will remain a mystery.

Once again, the people of Tamil Nadu have paid the price for India's notoriously lax industrial safety measures.
