ED Seizes Rs 31 Crore Worth of Jewellery, Cash from Maharashtra Official

jewelery and cash amounting to horrific Rs 31 crore has been seized from a senior official of a civic body in Maharashtra by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on charges of corruption and money laundering. The official, who has not been identified, was booked for misuse of power and facilitating illegal constructions in the western state's satellite city of Navi Mumbai, the agency said in a statement.

The seizures were made during raids at 13 locations in Mumbai and Hyderabad on Sunday. The cash amounts to Rs 9.04 crore, while the value of the diamond-studded jewellery is Rs 23.25 crore. The agency said it had evidence of the official's involvement in facilitating fraudulent construction of buildings and misuse of funds.

The seized valuables may be linked to three city-based jewellers, officials added. The official has been arrested and produced before a court, which granted ED custody for a further three days. The agency said it had gathered evidence of the official's contacts with "hawala operators" and that it suspected the money was meant for "further infiltration" into politics.

The latest raids are part of ED's ongoing probe into a web of alleged corruption in Navi Mumbai's civic body, which handles urban planning and development. Several officials and real estate developers have been arrested in the probe.

The case highlights ED's efforts to tackle corruption and illicit wealth in city planning, which often involves huge sums exchanged discreetly.

The agency has sought help from other authorities to ascertain the exact sources of the seized funds and their ultimate use.

This is not the first time that such a large amount of cash and valuables have been seized by Indian authorities. Many such seizures have raised questions about the source of the money and the extent of corruption and illicit wealth in Indian society.
