EaseMyTrip accused Metasoft, the parent company of MakeMyTrip, of having direct ties with China. This allegation was met with concerns as India continues to face issues with China, especially in the Ladakh region.
A little over a year has passed since the deadly clash between the Indian and Chinese military in Galwan Valley, a dangerous escalation in the mountainous region of Ladakh. This altercation led to the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and an undisclosed number on the Chinese side. Since then, relations between the two global superpowers have been strained, with commerce and trade between the two nations taking a hit.
It is within this climate that travel company EaseMyTrip has made startling claims against Metasoft, the parent company of MakeMyTrip, an Indian travel website. In a recent extraordinary general meeting, EaseMyTrip alleged that Metasoft had partnered with two Chinese companies, one of which is said to be closely associated with the Chinese government. The travel company claimed that this poses a serious national security risk, citing the ongoing border tensions with China.
Speaking to the Times of India, an EaseMyTrip representative said:
"The independence and neutrality of Indian travel companies are crucial for the larger national interest, given the prevailing circumstances between India and China. We hope the regulatory authorities will take note of this and take appropriate action."
Metasoft has since denied all allegations, calling them "malicious and misconceived," in a statement released by the company.
"Metasoft (which owns and operates MakeMyTrip) is an Indian company, incorporated in India, governed by Indian laws, and is listed on the stock exchange in India. The majority of its shareholders are Indian citizens, and its business within India is carried out by Indian citizens," the company said.
"Like any other business enterprise, Metasoft and MakeMyTrip also have relationships with other entities, including some Chinese entities, entirely for commercial purposes and to enhance the products and services they offer to Indian consumers."
These allegations come a week after the Indian government announced the banning of 118 Chinese apps. This move was a retaliation to the recent Sino-Indian border clashes and followed a similar ban in 54 Chinese apps in the previous month.
The EaseMyTrip allegations against Metasoft and MakeMyTrip are a cause for concern, especially given the current geopolitical climate between India and China. While the truth of these claims remains to be seen, one thing is certain: the aftershocks of the deadly Galwan Valley clash are still being felt today.
