Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday greeted people of Sikkim on its statehood day, highlighting the state's unique achievements in diverse sectors.
"Sikkim is known for its natural beauty, flora and fauna, and the innovative measures taken by the state government to boost tourism. Fifty years ago, the country witnessed double joy on this day. The nation got the opportunity to celebrate the citizenship of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee. It was also the day when Sikkim joined the Indian democratic framework by becoming a state," Modi said in a series of tweets.
The prime minister praised Sikkim's strides in diverse sectors, from tourism to agriculture, healthcare, and sanitation. He highlighted the state's initiatives in the development of organic farming, which he said, "inspires the country and the world."
Modi also highlighted the state government's efforts to provide tap water and sanitation facilities to every household and the conversion of tourist spots into "eco-friendly, sustainable, and holistic destinations."
"Happy Statehood Day to all Sikkim residents. This day marks the merger of Sikkim with India. This event also highlights the cultural diversity of India. Sikkim is a symbol of India's splendid unity in diversity," he added.
Sikkim became the 22nd state of the Indian Union on May 16, 1975.
Since then, the mountain state has made significant progress, leveraging its rich biodiversity and natural resources.
The state has recently focused on developing sustainable tourism and emerging as a favorite eco-hub for nature enthusiasts.
With its unique achievements in diverse sectors, Sikkim has indeed become a symbol of India's unity in diversity and inclusive growth.
