The outgoing Chief Justice of India, BR Gavali, criticized the Supreme Court Bar Association's (SCBA) decision to not give Justice Bela M Trivedi a farewell event. Speaking at the inauguration of the Constitution Day celebrations on Friday, Chief Justice Gavali said, "it pained him deeply" and "it should pain every member of the legal fraternity". He highlighted that Justice Trivedi had an "outstanding career" and "deserved the best send-off".

He further reflected on the importance of such events and their role in maintaining the "glorious legacy" of the legal services. He hoped that the Supreme Court Bar Association would take note of his comments and "rectify their mistake".

This development comes amidst a growing trend of lack of farewell ceremonies and events for outgoing judges and judicial officers, which has been criticized by many for the negative impact it has on the "administration of justice".

This is not the first time that the Supreme Court Bar Association has been criticized for not giving a judge a send-off. Earlier this year, Justice NV Ramana, who is currently the Chief Justice of India, did not receive a farewell ceremony from the SCBA due to his decision to skip a convention of the Bar Association weeks before his retirement.

It remains to be seen if the SCBA will take note of the Chief Justice's comments and change their approach towards farewell ceremonies for retiring judges.
