Nearly 20 states are anticipated to experience heavy rain and thunderstorms, as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issues warnings until May 18th. These warnings come in the midst of several heat wave warnings for northwestern regions of India.

This year has been particularly brutal when it comes to extreme weather phenomena. Just last month, residents of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan experienced scorching heat waves, with the capital city of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow, recording a maximum temperature of 47 degrees Celsius. Now, the maximum temperature in Rajasthan's Churu district reached 44.4 degrees Celsius on May 11th, indicating that the heat waves are here to stay.

Nationwide, the IMD issued warnings of heavy rain and thunderstorms for the states of Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Daman and Diu, Goa, Gujarat, Madya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

Similarly, the regional climate outlook forum (RCRF) issued an advisory for heavy rain in the state of Bihar, along with the eastern and northeastern regions of the country. These warnings are in effect until May 18th, effectuating a tentative 'break' in the impending summer heat.

The seasonal climate trend for this year forecasts higher precipitation than usual, which, if true, will relief-flooded regions with much-needed hydration and hopefully alleviate the intensity of the heat waves.
