After a lengthy discussion with Russian president Vladimir Putin, Joe Biden has agreed to facilitate a meeting between Putin and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the 'coming days.' This comes after a prior meeting between the two leaders has been stalled for months, due to Russia's war against Ukraine.
In a briefing with reporters, Biden detailed his conversation with Putin, stating that the Russian leader expressed interest in finding a 'dignified way' to end the war in Ukraine. Putin also expressed a desire to strengthen Russian democracy and to relieve shortages of food and fertilizer caused by the war.
In response, Biden proposed that Russia and Ukraine maintain a ceasefire as soon as possible in order to avoid the impending humanitarian crisis the country is facing this winter. He also suggested that Putin and Zelenskyy meet in person to negotiate further.
"I informed President Putin that President Zelenskyy wants to meet in person to discuss these initiatives and that we are working to arrange that meeting in the coming days," said Biden.
While the Russian president has yet to comment on the proposed meeting, Biden's suggestion of a ceasefire is promising news for Ukrainians, as temperatures are plummeting and many cities are facing devastatingly low supplies of heating fuel.
