No country should have to choose between weathering a crisis and welcoming immigrants, but that is the choice that the Supreme Court has presented to America and in doing so, has made the plight of Venezuelans even worse.
Yesterday, the Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration could end specials status for some 350,000 Venezuelans in the U.S., leaving them vulnerable to deportation once their visas expire. This decision came a day after the Department of Homeland Security announced it would not renew Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuela, which has been in place since 2015.
This is a devastating blow for Venezuelans who, because of socioeconomic collapse, political unrest, and severe shortages of food and medicine, have sought refuge in the United States.
The Trump administration has led with anti-immigrant policies and messaging, and with this decision, the Supreme Court has enabled the administration to execute that mindset, making it harder for Venezuelans to find shelter from their country's crisis.
Many of these individuals and families have built new lives and have become contributing members of their communities. They have every right to feel safe, secure, and to pursue happiness in a time where their own government can't guarantee that basic right.
Unfortunately, our world is facing a monumental refugee crisis. Rather than turning away, we should be embracing our neighbors and offering support during these trying times. Today, we feel the weight of the Supreme Court's decision a little more strongly, but we must continue to speak with one voice: All humans deserve safety, dignity, and an opportunity to thrive. Today, we feel that this is out of reach for far too many.
