'No effective agitation' for LDF govt's third term, says CPI(M) State secretary

The CPI(M) State secretary in Kerala, M.V. Govindan, has claimed that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government will battle for its third term in power as the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) has not been able to launch any effective agitation against it in the past four years, according to a Times of India report.

In an interview with the publication, Govindan said that the UDF, a coalition of several parties, had "miserably failed" to present itself as an alternative to the ruling coalition, despite widespread protests and demonstrations against the LDF government over issues such as the gold smuggling scandal, the allegations and counter-allegations between the two fronts heating up, and the UDF alleging foul play in the recent civic polls.

The Left leader further asserted that the UDF was "desperate" to form a government after the next year's assembly polls and had "no agenda or strategy" to accomplish that goal.

"They are trying to cobble together a force by joining hands with dissidents and unpopular elements. They are yet to explain what they plan to do for the state if they win," Govindan added in the ToI report.

However, opposition parties have been fiercely critical of the incumbent government, with Congress leader and former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy stating that the people were "fed up" with the ruling regime and that the tide was turning against the LDF, according to a Indian Express report.

The CPI(M) State secretary's comments come as Kerala gears up for elections next year, with the LDF seeking a third term in power after winning the 2016 polls and securing a majority once more in 2021.

The upcoming elections are slated to be a crucial test for the ruling coalition, with the Opposition hoping to stage a comeback and reclaim power in the southern state.

Only time will tell whether the CPI(M) leader's confident predictions will prove true or whether the opposition UDF can stage a comeback against the LDF regime.
