The Aam Admi Party (AAP) has decided to revamp its students' wing, which struggled to make inroads in Delhi University (DU) student politics. The party has rebranded the Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) as the Chhatra Aadmi Party (AAP) and appointed Nagendra Sharma, a second-year student at the University of Delhi (DU), as its national president. The AAP hopes that the relaunch will help it do better in the upcoming DU student body elections.
The CYSS was formed in 2015 and primarily focused on organizing workshops and seminars in colleges across Delhi. However, it failed to make a significant impact in student elections in Delhi University and other universities.
The newly appointed national president, Nagendra Sharma, is optimistic about the future and hopes to channel the dissatisfaction of students with the ruling dispensation and the opposition. "The CYSS has been reborn as the Chhatra AAP to focus on student-centric policies and to create a powerful student ecosystem. We will work to strengthen the party on university campuses," he said.
The AAP is keen to establish a strong presence in DU, considering it is a hotbed of student politics, and elections are due in October this year. Sharma's appointment and the rebranding of the students' wing indicate that the AAP is prepared to embark on a serious endeavor to capture power in student elections across colleges and universities in Delhi.
Only time will tell whether the reboot will translate into improved results for the AAP in the dynamic and contentious world of student politics.
