Former Pakistani cricketer Danish Kaneria's portrait stands removed from the wall at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Wednesday, following allegations of misconduct and an ongoing investigation.
Danish Kaneria has been a figure of controversy since allegations emerged that he was involved in spot-fixing. Subsequently, the former Pakistani spinner has been removed from a stadium in India. Having represented Pakistan across the formats before his retirement in 2012, Kaneria featured in a testimonial match at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, where he faced allegations of spot-fixing.
Spot-fixing involves rigging a specific aspect of a game in cricket, most commonly the result of a particular over, inning, or match. Upon investigation by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Kaneria was exonerated of any wrongdoing.
However, the Jaipur stadium authorities received complaints about his portrait on the wall alongside other greats of the game. As a result, the portrait was removed, leaving Kaneria himself to claim that it reflected a conspiracy against him.
"I am disappointed with this treatment, and it seems like a decision taken to please someone who can exert pressure. If the Indian cricket board investigated me 10 years ago and found me innocent, what wrongdoing have I done now that my picture has been removed from the stadium?" he said.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has standing reservations about Kaneria, and these recent developments will do little to help his case to have those perceived injustices addressed.
It remains to be seen if the PCB will respond to this incident or indeed if the Sawai Mansingh Stadium will take any further action to clarify its position.
