Steve Smith Set For Short MLC Stint Between WTC Final And WI Tour

Despite believing that he would miss the upcoming tour of West Indies, Steve Smith is reportedly set for a short stint in the Australian Senate during the World Test Championship final.

Steve Smith, David Warner, and Cameron Bancroft, the trio famously caught in the ball-tampering scandal, faced a one-year ban from international and domestic cricket and subsequently missed the 2019 Ashes series. Smith, who has been in dazzling form this year, especially against India in the four-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy, will be eager to make an impact in the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand.

As per a report by ESPNCricinfo, the prolific batsman was believed to be missing the upcoming tour of the West Indies in July. The report states: "A CA spokesman had said earlier this month that Smith 'wasn't expected to go' to the West Indies, though that could be subject to change as the situation evolves." However, it now seems the 32-year-old has had his hopes raised of playing in the WTC final, followed by the West Indies tour, and then the Big Bash League (BBL).

Smith is reportedly set to be included in Australia's 20-man squad for the WTC final against New Zealand, slated to begin on June 18 in Southampton. The squad will be trimmed subsequently for the West Indies tour. The report claims, "He (Smith) will enter the Australian squad for the final, likely as its 18th member, with the understanding he will be in line for selection for the tour of the Caribbean unless he is required for the last stages of the BBL."

The development certainly comes as a delight for Smith fans worldwide, as they can expect the prolific batsman to don the Yellow jersey once again and hope to see him thrive in the WTC final and the West Indies tour.
