Bengal CM Mamata disburses second tranche of Banglar Bari to 12 lakh beneficiaries

Over 12 lakh beneficiaries in West Bengal are set to benefit from the second tranche of the Banglar Bari scheme, with chief minister Mamata Banerjee pushing the button to disburse the funds on Sunday, 19 February.

Addressing the occasion, Banerjee highlighted multiple housing and welfare initiatives of her government, while also taking a shot at the opposition BJP for its failed housing promises in northern Bengal's tea gardens.

'The BJP is trying to fool the people of the state's tea garden areas with false promises. Tea garden workers will not get any benefit if the BJP comes to power,' Banerjee said, claiming that the BJP's promise of housing for each tea garden family in the region was mere election rhetoric. She also highlighted the ongoing development programs for the tea community, including the Tea Garden Authority and implementation of minimum wages.

Banerjee added that her government has so far built homes for more than 1.6 crore people across the state, with the highest number of beneficiaries being from the tea garden community.

The chief minister also announced that work on a over bridge in Siliguri, which has been delayed for over a decade, will finally start within the next six months.

This second disbursement comes after over 87 lakh beneficiaries across the state received funds in the first phase of the Banglar Bari scheme in December 2022.

The state government has allocated a total of Rs 278 crore for the second tranche of the scheme.

According to the chief minister's office, the beneficiaries of the scheme are mainly from backward classes, minor communities, the Scheduled Castes, and the Tribes.

Beneficiaries receive between Rs 25,000 and Rs 75,000 for developing homes depending on their needs.

With an eye to the upcoming Panchayat polls, Banerjee also highlighted the achievements of her government in the rural areas, claiming that the panchayat allowance for village panchs and panchas has increased threefold during her tenure.

She also claimed that her government has appointed thousands of school teachers, addressing a long-pending demand in the state.

Concluding her address, the chief minister called for unity and urged people to work together to develop the state.

'If the people of the state stand united, no injustice will be done to West Bengal,' she said.

The disbursement was attended by senior Trinamool leaders, including ministers and MPs, and held across 534 blocks of the state in the presence of local MPs, MLAs, and representatives of self-help groups (SHGs).
