Legendary South African bowler Dale Steyn has criticized the batting strategy of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team during a recent press conference. CSK, led by Ravindra Jadeja, is currently participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season.
Steyn, who has achieved incredible feats throughout his career, expressed his confusion at CSK's tactic of sending marquee players like skipper Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo down the order instead of batting them higher up.
"It's just a matter of being a little bit weird. I think they're probably the only team that doesn't have a 'designated finisher'. Every other team has had someone who's really pumped to bat at number six or seven but they're not quite sure who wants to do it for Chennai", said Steyn.
The former speedster, who delivered the fastest pitched delivery ever bowled in IPL history, expressed his views on the overall strategy of the team as well. CSK, despite boasting a star-studded squad, has failed to perform as expected this season, landing them at the bottom of the table.
"I think their math is wrong. You want to make sure you get your best players as many balls as possible. They're trying to finish the game and they're trying to bat deeper but they haven't got the runs on the board", added Steyn.
Steyn's criticism stems from the fact that CSK's approach is leaving their best batters with hardly any deliveries to face towards the end of the innings. This is a relevant point, especially considering the team's sluggish performance this season. While they have yet to find their footing, it remains to be seen how CSK's batting strategy evolves, particularly with veteran batter Robin Uthappa calling for a more aggressive approach.
These comments from Dale Steyn highlight the contentious issue of strategic planning in cricket and shed light on the decisions made by CSK management this IPL season. While the three-time IPL champions are known for their calculated risks, Steyn's remarks imply that it may be time to reevaluate their batting tactics, especially with the tournament progressing and points becoming increasingly crucial.
As the season continues, it will be interesting to see if CSK adapts to these critiques and find a way to better utilize their impressive roster of batters or forge ahead with the same "math".
