Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited the Kursk region on the border with Ukraine to meet with troops and civilians. It is the first time he has visited the region since ordering the invasion of Ukraine which began in February of this year.
The Russian President was greeted with cheers and banners reading Cyrillic Peace as he attended a gathering with locals in the town of Kursk.
In a televised address, Putin declared his hope to "strengthen mutual support, mutual assistance, and cohesion" within the region.
Our military and special services are fulfilling their duties in a heroic fashion,
the president said, adding that Russia was "convinced that the current difficult situation will be overcome and that Russian sovereignty and freedom of existence will be guaranteed on this continent."
He did not directly refer to the war in Ukraine, nor did he mention the ongoing negotiations in the capital, Moscow, aimed at ending the conflict.
Putin's visit to the region comes as Ukrainian officials continue to urge Western countries to supply their military with more weapons to help them defend against Russia's invasion.
Whether this visit will strengthen Russian morale or further unify the international community against Putins' regime remains to be seen.
