Former Telangana Chief Minister and President of the BRS, K Chandrasekhar Rao, has been summoned by a judicial commission investigating alleged irregularities in the Kaleshwaram project. It is unclear whether the former CM, who is also known as KCR, will appear before the commission as he is currently occupied with outreach activities in advance of the upcoming elections.
The judicial commission was formed in July of this year under the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1986. It's investigating allegations of irregularities and violations of necessary procedures in the approval and implementation of the Kaleshwaram project. This investigation has political implications for TS politics and could affect the outcome of upcoming elections.
The project, which is an irrigation project in Telangana, began in 2016 and was completed in 2019. It is one of the largest irrigation projects in India and is said to have cost Rs 80,000 crore.
The commission has said that KCR is obliged to appear before it, citing the constitution of India and the CoI Act of 1986. Only time will tell whether KCR appears and if so, how this could shift the political playing field in the state of Telangana.
