Indian Motorcycle Giant Bajaj Plans Full Takeover of Euro Bike Maker KTM

Indian two-wheeler and motorcycle giant Bajaj Auto is on a mission to acquire a 100% stake in the Euro bike manufacturer KTM for 800 million (approx. INR 6,470 crore). The long-standing partnership between the two companies has spanned engagements in multiple areas, including R&D, sourcing, and distribution.

Since its inception in 2010, Bajaj Auto's stake in KTM has grown steadily from 50% to 75% now, with the latest funding round aiming to acquire the remaining 25%. Of this total 800 million debt package, 200 million has already been infused into the company so far and the balance 600 million is being done now, Bajaj Auto said.

The acquisition is a strategic move for Bajaj Auto to further expand its global footprint, as KTM already has a presence in more than 90 countries across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. This will enable Bajaj to harness the potential of KTM's brand and its strong market position in the high-performance motorcycle segment.

With the acquisition, Bajaj Auto aims to further capitalize on the growing global demand for motorcycles, particularly in the premium and adventure segments. The company is looking to expand its presence in the international market, leveraging KTM's strong European roots and presence to enhance its technological capabilities and brand recognition.

The move is a testament to the growing importance of the global two-wheeler market, which is expected to reach $28.16 billion by 2026, with a CAGR of 6.14%.

The transaction is still subject to approval from the boards of Bajaj Auto and KTM, and the contract is expected to close by June 30, 2023.

Overall, this acquisition signals Bajaj's ambition to become a significant global player in the motorcycle industry, competing with the likes of Harley-Davidson and Yamaha. We can't help but wonder what new exciting chapters these two brands will write together, accelerating growth for both companies and bringing premium biking experiences to riders worldwide.
