China's continued support for Pakistan is increasingly impacting Beijing's relations with other countries on many strategic fronts. How long will China's diplomatic strategy of supporting Pakistan continue, and what consequences will it face?
China has been strengthening its relations with Pakistan for several years, including through the development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor as part of Beijing's global Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). However, this strategy is backfiring on multiple fronts. Not only has it failed to wholly gain Pakistan's trust, but it has also led to disagreements with other countries, including India, Afghanistan, and the United States.
Most recently, Beijing's attempts to strengthen its relationship with Pakistan seemed to have backfired after the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. When the Taliban assumed control of the country, they reportedly asked Pakistan and China to help restore the Afghan banking system. However, Beijing refused, asserting that the new Taliban regime must be recognised by the international community first. The Taliban's request further highlights China's diminishing influence in Afghanistan, where the United States, Russia, and India are maintaining diplomatic relations with the Taliban.
China's controversial strategy also includes giving safe haven to Pakistani terrorists, who have launched attacks in other countries, including India. These terrorists are responsible for deadly attacks in India-controlled Kashmir, which have killed civilians and Indian security forces personnel. These attacks undermine India's security and have resulted in a downturn in India-Pakistan relations. It has also caused setbacks to China's relationship with India, a crucial trading partner it hopes to rely on further in the future.
While China continues to strengthen its relationship with Pakistan, it is becoming increasingly isolated internationally. Unless Beijing changes its diplomatic strategy towards Pakistan, it will likely continue to face setbacks and strained relationships with other countries on strategic fronts.
