The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has approved the renaming of Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South. This decision was taken a few months after the Centre rejected the proposal from the state government, led by Chief Minister, Basavaraj Bommai, to rename the district.

This approval comes after the Ministry of Home Affairs advised the government to consider renaming the district as Bengaluru South in early January 2023. The state government sent a fresh proposal to the Centre seeking its approval for the renaming of the district. The new name for the district is likely to boost the administrative ease and facilitate the expansion of the city of Bengaluru.

Earlier, the Centre had rejected the state government's proposal to rename the city of Bangalore as Bengaluru. The Centre cited that the city's name was not mentioned in the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC), 2001, released by the Karnataka government. The draft NRC had mentioned only the Bangalore Rural and Bangalore Urban districts.

It remains to be seen whether the state government will proceed with renaming Bangalore city as Bengaluru, as the Centre has explicitly asked them to not proceed with the renaming.
