Glenn Maxwell Bids Farewell to ODI Cricket, Eyes T20 World Cup Glory

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially retired from One Day International (ODI) cricket, ending a celebrated 149-match career that saw him lift two ODI World Cup titles. The 36-year-old confirmed his decision on The Final Word Podcast, citing the physical demands of the 50-over format, particularly after a serious leg injury in 2022, as the primary reason for his exit. While stepping away from ODIs, Maxwell remains committed to T20 internationals and is expected to play a key role in Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign in 2026.

Maxwell leaves behind a legacy defined by explosive batting, clutch performances, and unmatched versatility. Despite modest ODI numbers—3990 runs at 33.81 and 77 wickets at 47.32—his impact was monumental. Known for his aggressive style, Maxwell holds the second-highest strike rate in ODI history (126.70) and is the only non-opener to score a double century in an ODI chase. His 201* against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup, rescuing Australia from 91/7, is widely hailed as one of the greatest innings in ODI history.

Beyond his batting, Maxwell played critical roles with the ball and in the field. He was Australia’s main spinner in the 2015 World Cup and played a crucial supporting role in 2023, delivering economical spells and taking key wickets, including that of Rohit Sharma in the final. He also contributed memorable moments like a double-wicket maiden against Pakistan in 2014 to secure victory.

Cricket Australia praised Maxwell for his flair, commitment, and pivotal contributions to Australia’s ODI success. While he won’t don the yellow jersey in ODIs again, his journey continues in T20s, with selectors banking on his experience for the upcoming tour of the Caribbean and beyond.

As Maxwell transitions out of ODI cricket, he remains a thrilling figure in the T20 arena, ready to script more memorable moments in Australian cricket history.
