G7 Summit 2025: Canada Hosts as Group Marks 50 Years

The year 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the Group of 7 (G7), with Canada set to host the Leaders’ Summit from June 15 to 17 in Kananaskis, Alberta. This will be Canada’s seventh time as host. However, India’s absence from the guest list, despite attending every summit since 2019 (except the cancelled 2020 meet), is notable.

The G7 comprises seven of the world’s largest economies: the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom. Though informal and without a permanent secretariat, the group collectively represents around 40% of global GDP and serves as a major force in international policy discussions.

The G7’s origins trace back to 1973, when finance ministers met in Paris to address economic instability. The first official summit took place in 1975, with Canada joining the following year. Russia became a member in 1998, forming the G8, but was expelled in 2014 due to its annexation of Crimea.

Presidency rotates among members annually, with Canada leading in 2025. The summit’s agenda now extends beyond economics to include foreign policy, climate change, and security. Canada has so far invited Ukraine and Australia as guest countries, with more invitations expected.

The G7 continues to shape global governance through dialogue, cooperation, and shared democratic values.
