ECINET App: ECI Modernises Voter Turnout Reporting for Greater Transparency

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is launching a new mobile application, ECINET, to improve the speed and transparency of voter turnout reporting. This move follows criticism from opposition parties regarding delays during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Background and Purpose
The ECI faced scrutiny for releasing provisional turnout figures late, sparking concerns about data accuracy and transparency. To address this, ECINET will streamline reporting processes ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.

Key Features
ECINET will unify several ECI tools, including voter roll management, candidate affidavit access, and real-time turnout tracking. Presiding officers at polling stations will input turnout figures every two hours directly into the app, eliminating time-consuming manual reporting.

Current vs. New System
Previously, turnout data was relayed by phone or text to sector officers and then compiled manually by Returning Officers, causing delays. ECINET automates this process, ensuring quicker and more reliable updates.

Response to Criticism
After turnout figures rose significantly post-polling in 2024, opposition parties raised doubts. The ECI maintained that delays were due to logistical formalities, particularly in remote areas.

Transparency and Future Outlook

To build trust, the ECI began releasing updated figures around midnight from the third phase of the last elections. ECINET now marks a major step toward digitising election management, with the potential to enhance both efficiency and public confidence in India’s democratic process.
