RCB's Move to Karnataka HC to Quash Criminal Case

The Indian Premier League team Royal Challengers Bangalore has moved the Karnataka High Court to quash the criminal case filed against its managing director and co-owner Venus Venture Holdings Private Limited, and other officials in relation to the deadly stampede at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru that took place on June 4, 2022.

The petition was filed on Friday, August 5, 2022, in response to the criminal complaint filed by the Bangalore Urban District Youth Welfare Society on July 18, 2022. The complaint alleged culpable homicide, negligence, and violation of the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897, and the Karnataka Epidemic Diseases COVID-19 Regulations, 2020.

The plea argues that the case lacks evidence to establish that the accused, including the Bengaluru Rural District Youth Welfare Association, the event organizer, and Managing Director of RCB, Sanjeev Churiwala, and the Stadium Manager were responsible for the stampede.

Several witnesses have already recorded their statements with the police, and an investigation is ongoing.

The High Court is set to hear the petition on Monday, August 8, 2022.

Given the tragedy and the public interest at stake, we can only hope for a swift and just conclusion to this matter.
