Tablet revolution: Puducherry Assembly goes digital

In a first in the history of Puducherry, the Assembly has gone digital with the inauguration of an ambitious project named NeVA (Paperless Assembly). A tablet has been installed on the tables of all legislators to limit the use of paper in the House, in line with the Union Territory's commitment to promoting paperless governance.

Lawmakers will now be able to read the customary address of the Lt. Governor, the Chief Minister's budget speech, the list of business, notices served by members, and raise questions on the tablets. They will also be able to view graphs, charts, and videos during discussions on the budget and other financial matters.

This initiative is expected to reduce the need for paper by about 270 kg per session. With Assembly sessions held twice a month, approximately 10 tons of paper consumption will be avoided annually. The project is likely to be replicated in other states and union territories across India, serving as a model for digital governance.

Puducherry, known as the "French Riviera of the East," has long been a leader in promoting eco-friendly practices. This digital transformation of the Assembly is another step toward a more sustainable and progressive future.

The tablets will be equipped with various apps for different purposes, allowing for paperless functioning of the Assembly. This will also help to reduce the time spent on official procedures and boost productivity. The launch of the NeVA project is a significant step towards a more digital, eco-friendly, and efficient Assembly, marking Puducherry's commitment to staying ahead in progressive governance.
