After the departure of Simone Inzaghi, who left for Al Hilal, Inter Milan have appointed Cristian Chivu as their new coach. The former Romanian international enjoyed a glittering career as a defender, spending five years at Inter Milan from 2007 to 2012, where he won five major titles.
Chivu hung up his boots in 2016 and promptly gained his coaching badges, starting his managerial career at Romanian club Viitorul Constanta in 2019. He then replaced the sacked Ivo Ivovic as manager of Cagliari in Italy's Serie A in February 2022, before leaving the club in June of the same year.
Chronically afflicted by a lack of options, the former club captain was invited to return to Inter Milan as part of Inzaghi's staff, where he worked as a technical collaborator up until this latest promotion.
Speaking at his introductory press conference, Chivu expressed his delight: "It is a great honor to return to this club, where I have lived wonderful moments, and I thank the president and everyone for the opportunity. I cannot wait to get started.
It will certainly not be easy, but I am convinced that we can continue to give joy to our fans. We have begun to prepare for the next games, and I am very excited to start this new chapter of my story at this fantastic club."
Chivu's first game in charge is expected to be the Italian Super Cup final against Juventus on Wednesday.
