Senior BNP Leader Advocates Renewing India-Bangladesh Ties

Former Bangladesh Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury highlights the potential to renew bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and emphasizing regional importance.

In a recent exclusive with News18, Chowdhury, who is also the senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and former Minister of Commerce, voiced his sentiment on the importance of strong relations between India and Bangladesh, highlighting that it's a relationship that needs to be rebuilt on a foundation of mutual respect. Given the geographical proximity of the two countries, this relationship is vital for the entire region, including India and Bangladesh, and even Nepal and Myanmar, he emphasized.

Chowdhury argued that the relationship must be predicated on mutual respect for territorial integrity, sovereignty, and political independence, adding that both nations must strive to develop regional ties based on equality and not let it be dominated by any external force. This is a marked departure from the current state of affairs, implying a desire to sever ties with the Rakhine Corridor and a hope to reset ties with India.

Chowdhury's comments come as Bangladesh remains in a political flux, with the ruling Awami League (AL) government and the opposition BNP engaged in fierce political battles, with allegations of unfair elections and demanding the dissolution of parliament and fresh elections.
