Former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Atishi, has raised concerns about the deployment of excessive security personnel in the Kalkaji JJ cluster in South Delhi. The area is home to more than 900 families in over 500 makeshift houses and is reportedly under threat of demolition. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has posted eviction notices across the area, warning residents to vacate within three days or face the consequences. Atishi, who is also the vice-chair of the AAP's Wester Delhi wing, has accused the BJP-led MCD and the DDA of attempting to evict poor residents and clear the area for urban development projects.
Atishi stated that the residents have been residing in the area for decades, with many working in nearby factories and industries. She questioned why the deployment of paramilitary personnel was necessary to serve an eviction notice, describing the situation as "very scary and intimidating."
The DDA's notices cause concern for the future of the many low-income groups, seasonal migrants, and manual laborers residing in the area. With the excessive deployment of security forces and the tight deadline for residents to vacate, Atishi believes it mirrors the discriminatory practices of the BJP-led administration against the poor and marginalized groups.
The former Delhi CM has demanded answers from the DDA and the MCD about the imminent demolition threat to the area. She has asserted that every citizen, irrespective of class or caste, has the right to legal housing and dignified living conditions.
The incident has raised concerns about the marginalization and discrimination faced by poor and migrant communities in the nation's capital. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops and if the administration addresses the former Deputy CM's concerns.
