Sensex Settles Marginally Lower, Nifty Below 25,150; Bandhan Bank Down 3%

The BSE Sensex closed marginally lower on Wednesday, while the Nifty ended below 25,150, with banking and financial stocks leading the decline. Bandhan Bank was the top loser, down 3%. The market breadth was negative, with declines outpacing advances nearly two to one.

All sectoral indices on the BSE ended lower, led by financials, energy, and utilities. The midcap and smallcap indices also declined. Global indices Asian shares stepped back from eight-month highs on Wednesday as a jump in global bond yields triggered profit-taking on equities, with markets awaiting more cues from US-China trade talks.

The US dollar struggled to gain traction against a basket of major currencies, while the pound found support from Prime Minister Boris Johnson's promise to prioritise undoing parts of the EU divorce deal if re-elected. Market participants are also likely to keep an eye on the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy committee meeting, which starts today. The central bank is expected to cut its policy rate by 25 basis points, according to a Poll of more than 50 economists.

"Global cues, US-China trade talks, and institutional flows will set the tone for Indian benchmark indices this week," said Ajit Mishra, VP - Research, Religare Broking Ltd. "Markets are expected to remain volatile due to the general election. We suggest focusing on the broader market and stock-specific opportunities."
