Rail Station Name 'Illogical', Says BJP MP

Aligarh railway station's existing name, claimed to be connected to a Mughal emperor, is actually based on a former Mughal district magistrate accused of murder, according to a local BJP MP who has requested that the transportation hub be renamed.

The BJP MP Engineer Singh told the Railway Minister on Tuesday that the name of the station, which was established in 1894, should be changed since it is incorrect and lacks local support. Singh argued that the nearby Muslim Qazi Mandi and Bazurgaanagar neighbourhoods did not support the name.

Previously, Singh had asserted that the city's railway station had been improperly named and that only a mosque near the station had the same name. He claimed that a mosque is located near the railway station. However, neither the neighbourhood nor any other location in Aligarh district is known as Muzzamabad. He claimed that the name of the station should be changed to Aligarh Cantt as it falls within the jurisdiction of the Aligarh Cantonment Board.

The demand comes amid the BJP's efforts to change numerous town and railway station names across India to erase colonial-era influences and deface Muslim historical figures.

Quoting Singh, the story says that neither the district nor any other location in Aligarh is known as Muzzamabad. The neighbourhood and mosque near the railway station are both known as Aligarh.
