Former Chief Minister of Telangana and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) president K. Chandrasekhar Rao appeared before the PC Ghose Commission probing alleged irregularities in the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project on Wednesday.
The commission was appointed by the Supreme Court to investigate concerns about possible misuse of funds and conflicts of interest in the multi-billion dollar project. Mr. Rao, who served as Telangana's first chief minister from 2014 to 2018 and then again from 2018 to 2019, was reportedly accompanied by his political aide and Rajya Sabha member K. Kavitha.
This appearance comes after months of speculation and heated discussions on the matter, with Mr. Rao's lawyers previously claiming that the former chief minister's involvement was not necessary since he had not held any position related to the project since his second term as chief minister ended in 2019.
On Wednesday, Mr. Rao's lawyers once again emphasized this point, claiming that he had no involvement in the project's planning, bidding, construction, or monitoring.
The appearance by Mr. Rao, who is also known as KCR, signals a new development in the ongoing investigation, which has been highly controversial and politically charged.
The fate of the Kaleshwaram project and the people of Telangana, who are desperate for an overhaul of their irrigation systems, now rest on the shoulders of the PC Ghose Commission.
