Amazon Plans Major Expansion of Data Center Operations in Hyderabad

Amazon Inc. has expressed strong interest in significantly expanding its data center facilities and workforce in Hyderabad. This announcement came after a meeting between the Telangana delegation, led by IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu, and a senior leadership team from Amazon, including Kerry Person, Vice President of AWS Data Center Planning and Delivery.

Hyderabad has been identified as a key part of Amazon Web Services' (AWS) growth strategy, with the company already maintaining a significant presence in the region, including its largest corporate building worldwide and the launch of its dedicated air cargo network, ‘Amazon Air’, in 2023. Currently, three major data centers are operational in Hyderabad, and AWS has outlined plans for additional hyperscale data centers critical for AI and machine learning services.

Minister Sridhar Babu characterized the discussions with Amazon as highly positive and successful, assuring the company of the best incentives and comprehensive support from the Telangana government to facilitate their growth objectives in the region. "We expect a substantial expansion of their operations in our state," he noted.

Following the meeting, Kerry Person remarked, “I am excited about the opportunity to further expand our cloud infrastructure in Hyderabad, Telangana, as an integral part of AWS’s strategy in India. We anticipate that the AWS Region in Hyderabad will increasingly support the growth of cloud services in India, particularly in artificial intelligence. AWS is committed to contributing to Telangana’s digital ambitions and empowering our customers and partners to drive towards India’s trillion-dollar digital economy goal.”

With the anticipated expansion of AWS operations in Telangana, the state is poised to strengthen its position as a leading hub for cloud and data center infrastructure in India. Amazon offers a wide range of cloud business services, including computing, storage, databases, networking, machine learning, analytics, and now AI.

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., Amazon boasts a market capitalization of over $1.89 trillion and employs more than 1.5 million people globally.
