Taiwan Earthquake Leaves City Undamaged

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake rattled Taiwan's east coast, but there were no reports of damage or injuries, officials and scientists said. The quake was centered about 71 kilometers (44 miles) south of Hualien City at a depth of 31.1 kilometers (19 miles), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The tremor, which hit just before noon (local time) on Sunday was felt across the island, with some residents reporting they felt movements lasting for up to 30 seconds. Nevertheless, it did not result in any reported damage to buildings or infrastructure. Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA) reported.

Taipei's Tung Lo Hospital, located south of the epicenter, evacuated patients from its eighth and ninth floors, according to the Taiwan News. The management of the hospital decided to suspend visits to patients as a safety precaution, the report said.

"I felt a slight shaking for about five seconds, but my wife and I didn't think much of it, as we live on the sixth floor," Hualien resident Chen Li-yu told the news outlet.

Taiwan is located in a region that is prone to seismic activity. In late September, a magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck the east coast of neighboring Japan, killing at least four people and prompting a tsunami warning.

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) continues to closely monitor seismic activity in the region and will issue warnings if necessary.
