Despite a strong start by Australia, former captain Steve Smith believes the team didn't capitalize on their chances and let South Africa off the hook on Day 1 of the ICC World Test Championship final.
Smith, who is part of the commentary team for the WTC final, believes Australia's pace attack couldn't consistently hit the right areas, something South Africa's bowlers did exceptionally well. Speaking on the ICC's official broadcast, Smith said, "I think Australia could have been a lot better. We created a lot of chances, we just didn't capitalize on them. South Africa bowled brilliantly, they were more consistent than we were."
He added that if Australia had bowled with a little more consistency and held onto all the chances, they could have bowled South Africa out for less than 100. "It might have been a very, very different day. We talked about how many chances we created, but we didn't take them, and they did," he said.
Smith signed off by saying that Australia is still in a strong position but needs to quickly wipe out the tail-enders in the morning session to rattle the Proteas.
This marks an interesting development in what has been a gripping first day of the WTC final. Australia will look to capitalize on this momentum tomorrow and hope to wrap up the South African innings quickly to secure a big first-innings lead.
