Indian government alerts all MediaTek chipset users to a new security risk and advises them to take immediate action as millions of smartphone and TV users could be affected.
In recent times, increasing numbers of smartphones have been infected by malware and malicious apps, some of which have been designed to target MediaTek chipsets. MediaTek, a Taiwanese semiconductor company, is one of the world's leading suppliers of chips for smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, TVs, and other devices.
MediaTek issued a bulletin alerting users of its processors to a potential risk caused by ordinary rooting apps. MediaTek has shared user guidelines to mitigate the risks and warned users of the risks of using unknown third-party firmware and rooting apps.
The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has since issued a statement urging all users to update their devices to prevent a potential security breach. They advise users to only use devices from trusted manufacturers and avoid side-loading or rooting their devices to avoid compromising security.
The government's warning comes at a time when malware attacks have been on the rise in India, causing widespread havoc among private individuals as well as institutional systems. The warning highlights the need for users to be vigilant and ensure their devices are updated and secure.
It's important to note that, unfortunately, many users are unaware of the risks associated with rooting apps and third-party firmware, which can often lead to severe security breaches. The warning issued by both the MediaTek and the Indian government provides a vital alert to these risks and helps keep users vigilant against threats to their security.
