The GST Network (GSTN) issues a vital advisory for taxpayers grappling with glitches on the GST portal as over 3 lakh amnesty applications are filed. The GST Amnesty Scheme was introduced under Section 128A of the Central GST Act, 2017, and provides a one-time relief to taxpayers to file their late GST returns and claims for erroneous tax payments without any penalties.
The amnesty scheme was introduced after multiple GST registrants filed GST returns late or with errors amidst the ever-changing regulations over the past few years. The one-time relief is a chance for taxpayers to rectify their late filings and mistakes without any penalties, which is especially useful for small businesses who faced multiple challenges amidst the pandemic.
The GSTN, which maintains the GST portal, has acknowledged the technical issues that some users are facing while submitting their applications. These include problems while uploading supporting documents, payment of nominal fees, and booking a GST practitioner to complete the filing process.
In response, the GSTN has allowed a temporary arrangement for manual filing for such affected taxpayers. Taxpayers must email the GSTN helpdesk with their GSTIN, contact details, and a brief description of the problem. The GSTN helpdesk will then connect them with a GST helpdesk officer to facilitate the filing process. Taxpayers have until the end of June to make use of this one-time opportunity.
