Bridgetown, Barbados - A commanding half-century from Qiana Joseph, complemented by resilient contributions from Hayley Matthews and Stafanie Taylor, propelled the West Indies to a four-wicket (DLS method) victory over South Africa in the first One-Day International, securing a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Earlier in the day, South Africa, opting to bat first after winning the toss, got off to a promising start thanks to a brisk half-century from Tazmin Brits. Her innings saw her become the second-fastest South African woman to reach 1000 ODI runs. Brits and captain Laura Wolvaardt built a solid 73-run opening partnership. However, West Indies' spinners, Karishma Ramharack and Afy Fletcher, along with a couple of crucial run-outs, orchestrated a middle-order collapse that saw South Africa tumble from 73 for no loss to a precarious 104 for 5.
Despite the wobble, Nadine de Klerk's aggressive 42 off 38 balls from number eight provided a much-needed rearguard action, guiding South Africa to a respectable total of 232 for 9. Ramharack and Aaliyah Alleyne were the pick of the West Indies bowlers, claiming two wickets each.
In pursuit of 233, Joseph and Matthews launched a formidable opening stand of 88 runs. Matthews' fluent 40 set the tone before Ayanda Hlubi claimed her wicket. Joseph continued to dominate, striking ten fours and a six on her way to a 58-ball 60 before also falling to Hlubi. A brief flurry of wickets for South Africa saw the West Indies at 127 for 4 when rain intervened. The lengthy stoppage led to a revised target of 180 from 34 overs. Post-rain, Stafanie Taylor calmly anchored the chase with an unbeaten 30, guiding the West Indies to victory with two overs remaining, despite losing two more wickets.
