Sanderson's Late Burst Secures Historic Sixth Straight Win for Steelbacks

Northampton, England - Ben Sanderson delivered a masterclass in death bowling, snatching three wickets in the penultimate over to seal an unprecedented sixth consecutive Vitality Blast victory for Northamptonshire Steelbacks against Birmingham Bears at Wantage Road. His exceptional spell, which saw him finish with figures of 3 for 31, was instrumental in securing a dramatic 10-run win for the hosts and extended his tournament wicket tally to 17.

The Bears, chasing 185, appeared poised for victory, with captain Moeen Ali well-set on 31 and needing just 24 runs from the final two overs. However, Sanderson’s intervention proved decisive. He ripped through the Bears' lower order, dismissing the dangerous Moeen and two others in a span of four balls, effectively derailing their chase.

Earlier, the Steelbacks' innings was propelled by a brilliant 60 off 35 balls from Justin Broad and a fluent 53 off 36 from Matthew Breetzke, his first half-century of the season. Their 59-run partnership with skipper David Willey (34) laid a strong foundation for Northamptonshire's total of 184 for 6. Despite the efforts of Birmingham's Pakistan international Hassan Ali, who claimed 3 for 42 with two wickets in the final over, the Steelbacks set a challenging target.

In response, Dan Mousley led the charge for the Bears with an impressive 68 off 42 balls, supported by Tom Latham's 34. However, the Steelbacks' bowlers, particularly George Scrimshaw (2 for 25) and David Willey (2 wickets), chipped away at the Bears' lineup. Despite Mousley's heroics and a late surge that saw the Bears needing just 53 from the last five overs, Willey's crucial dismissal of Mousley set the stage for Sanderson's match-winning over. The Steelbacks' remarkable streak continues, showcasing their formidable form in this year's competition.
